Major Benefits of Cloud Computing in 2019

There’s no question that cloud technology is redefining the way we do business, including the sharing, storing, and accessing of data to remote locations. The benefits of moving to the cloud far outweigh any disadvantages. By enabling you to boost organizational efficiency, the cloud helps you run your business more smoothly. The availability of all the resources on demand also substantially reduces your IT costs, allowing you to allocate funds to where you need them more.

Scalability
Cloud solutions can support your ever-changing requirements by enabling you to scale resources quickly and efficiently. You can upgrade your storage or bandwidth plans at any point simply by changing your subscription plan. The pay-per-use option is probably the greatest advantage of the cloud, and the cost transparency makes for reliable planning.

This scalability minimizes the risks associated with in-house operational issues and maintenance. You have high-performance resources at your disposal with professional solutions and zero up-front investment.

Not only are your cloud services scalable, but your business can scale as well with the increased flexibility your cloud services provide. You can allocate funding to other growth opportunities and create efficiencies in areas you have thus far been unable to tackle.

Automated Updates
In cloud computing, the server suppliers regularly update your software including the updates on security, so that you do not need to agonize on wasting your crucial time on maintaining the system. This will enable your IT team to work on business critical issues to help grow your business.

Security
Security is foremost one of the benefits of cloud computing that guarantee data integrity. A cloud service provider should offer a platform designed with strict security measures. The provider must ensure that servers storing your files are well managed to prevent data theft.

Security features for offline computers are more expensive to get when compared to those of a cloud-hosted platform. Note that data in the cloud is as vulnerable as data on offline computer systems. However, the cloud appears to be safer than offline computers since most cloud service providers fix bugs as soon as they’re detected.

Cloud infrastructure has hundreds of people managing data while offline computers only rely on an individual or team to install the security features.

Collaboration
When your team can access documents anytime, anywhere, they can collaborate more efficiently. Your workflow improves because your employees have the flexibility to edit and share documents when it is convenient. That is not to say that coming into the office is not important; however, you maintain a competitive edge by giving your employees more of a work/life balance.

This increased collaboration on a cloud platform facilitates virtual work all over the world among your employees and your clients. It can reduce time-to-market and improve product development and customer service.

The cloud makes running your business simpler by allowing you to track documents without having to worry about USB drives or other pieces of equipment.

Flexibility
Flexibility covers a wide array of solutions. From storage space to bandwidth flexibility, your business must assess its needs and see how the cloud can meet them.

One of the immediate business advantages that cloud solutions offer in this respect is the increased flexibility of both in-house and remote employees. Document storage in the public cloud allows employees to collaborate more efficiently and work on any platform. Any web-enabled device can access cloud-based tools, which is especially useful for mobile or remote workforces. Your employees can work at any time and in any time zone without restriction.

The flexibility of server loads is another advantage of adopting cloud. You can choose to turn up capacity when you expect more traffic to your site and turn it back down when you don’t need as much. The accelerated implementation streamlines your processes, creating increased accessibility and decreasing your reliance on local hardware or software.

Cloud Computing 101 - Types of Cloud Services

Cloud computing services fall into 4 categories: infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), software as a service (SaaS) and FaaS (functions as a service). These are sometimes called the cloud computing stack, because they build on top of one another.

Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS)
IaaS is the most basic category of cloud computing services that allows you rent IT infrastructure (servers or VM’s) from a cloud provider on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Platform as a service (PaaS)
Platform-as-a-service (PaaS) refers to the supply an on-demand environment for developing, testing, delivering and managing software applications. It is designed to quickly create web or mobile apps, without worrying about setting up or managing the underlying infrastructure of servers, storage, network and databases needed for development.

Software as a service (SaaS)
Software-as-a-service (SaaS) is a method for delivering software applications over the Internet as per the demand and on a subscription basis. SaaS helps you host and manage the software application and underlying infrastructure and handle any maintenance (software upgrades and security patching).

FaaS (functions as a service)
FaaS adds another layer of abstraction to PaaS, so that developers are completely insulated from everything in the stack below their code. Instead of handling the hassles of virtual servers, containers, and application runtimes, they upload narrowly functional blocks of code, and set them to be triggered by a certain event. FaaS applications consume no IaaS resources until an event occurs, reducing pay-per-use fees.

Cloud Computing 101 – Types of Cloud

Cloud computing helps businesses to be more efficient and save on software and hardware that are important for different operations. The definition of cloud computing varies depending on your source but what is generally agreed is that it involves access of software or hardware that are in the “cloud” i.e. use of software or hardware remotely. If your company is using specialized applications where you did not have to set up server or buy hardware or software to run them, then you are probably using a cloud application.

Companies can use cloud computing to increase their IT functionality or capacity without having to add software, personnel, invest in additional training or set up new infrastructure.

Public Cloud
Public clouds are the most common way of deploying cloud computing. The cloud resources (like servers and storage) are owned and operated by a third-party cloud service provider and delivered over the Internet. Microsoft Azure or the Google Cloud are examples of a public cloud. With a public cloud, all hardware, software, and other supporting infrastructure is owned and managed by the cloud provider. In a public cloud, you share the same hardware, storage, and network devices with other organizations or cloud “tenants.” You access services and manage your account using a web browser. Public cloud deployments are frequently used to provide web-based email, online office applications, storage, and testing and development environments.

Private Cloud
A private cloud consists of computing resources used exclusively by one business or organization. The private cloud can be physically located at your organization’s on-site datacenter, or it can be hosted by a third-party service provider. But in a private cloud, the services and infrastructure are always maintained on a private network and the hardware and software are dedicated solely to your organization. In this way, a private cloud can make it easier for an organization to customize its resources to meet specific IT requirements. Private clouds are often used by government agencies, financial institutions, any other mid- to large-size organizations with business-critical operations seeking enhanced control over their environment.

Hybrid Cloud
Hybrid clouds combine on-premises infrastructure, or private clouds, with public clouds so organizations can reap the advantages of both. In a hybrid cloud, data and applications can move between private and public clouds for greater flexibility and more deployment options. For instance, you can use the public cloud for high-volume, lower-security needs such as web-based email, and the private cloud (or other on-premises infrastructure) for sensitive, business-critical operations like financial reporting. In a hybrid cloud, “cloud bursting” is also an option. This is when an application or resource runs in the private cloud until there is a spike in demand (such as seasonal event like online shopping or tax filing), at which point the organization can “burst through” to the public cloud to tap into additional computing resources.

Community Clouds
Community clouds are a recent variation on the private cloud model that provide a complete cloud solution for specific business communities. Businesses share infrastructure provided by the Cloud Service Provider for software and development tools that are designed to meet community needs. In addition, each business has its own private cloud space that is built to meet the security, privacy and compliance needs that are common in the community.

Community clouds are an attractive option for companies in the health, financial or legal spheres that are subject to strict regulatory compliance. They are also well-suited to managing joint projects that benefit from sharing community-specific software applications or development platforms.

Ignite your Business - SAP HANA Sandbox as a Service

A sandbox is a type of software testing  environment that enables the isolated execution of software or programs for independent  evaluation, monitoring or testing. In an implementation, a sandbox also may be  known as a test server, development server or working directory.

Additionally, the sandbox technique is implemented in information security to evaluate suspicious software or files containing malicious code. Typically, the source code of sandboxed software is not tested prior to isolation, which reduces unexpected behavior.

Cloud Sandbox as a Service

Cloud Sandboxing are self-contained  infrastructure environments that can be
configured to look exactly like the final target deployment environment but can be created and run anywhere. For example, developers can create a sandbox that looks like the production environment - from network and hardware to OS versions and software to cloud APIs. They do their development in that sandbox for a short period of time and when they are done they tear down the sandbox.

Benefits of Cloud Sandbox as a Service

  • Enable frequent and comprehensive testing - Whether you’re developing modern applications involving multiple layers of interdependent components or practicing test driven  development, you need to test earlier and more comprehensively.
  • Accelerate delivery - You’re building mobile apps, and they’re  connected to enterprise backend services.  During development most teams need to build new backend services, connect to existing  services, or create ‘front-end facades’ for  existing services. However, it might not be  possible to access those services, or they may not even be complete.
  • Continuous everything - A critical component of continuous delivery and continuous integration is fully automated testing. You must be able to continually and automatically run test suites when your application changes in order to realize continuous delivery. If your app depends on other services those services must be available and setup with the correct test data each run to ensure the test suite runs the same way every time.
  • Streamline test environment provisioning - Development, Test, QA and Performance Test teams all need full environments to complete their tasks. Ideally, they should be able to work in parallel however this requires an environment per team. Some systems in your environment might not be yours or even be associated with a cost per transaction to use. This can be very painful during testing and especially during  performance and load testing.
  • Reduce risk and cost - Eliminate much of the concurrent demand for development and test environments and  pay-per-use service charges from third parties by using virtual services to create simulated environments.

Transform HR with SAP Solutions powered by Approyo

HR has been transforming for many years, focused traditionally on topics like automation, efficiency, and direct access to HR data and services for individual employees. Technologies and strategies that have supported these initiatives include human resource management systems (HRMS), talent management, employee self-service, and manager self-service. However, a new and expanded HR transformation is underway, led by cloud capabilities including mobile and continuous upgrades, as well as the availability of new digital technologies like machine learning and artificial intelligence. These capabilities are enabling HR to reimagine new ways of delivering HR services and strategies throughout the organization. Whereas the traditional view of HR transformation was all about doing existing things better, the next generation of HR transformation is focused on doing completely new things.

These new digital aspects of HR transformation do not replace the existing focus of automation and efficiency. They work hand inhand and, in many cases, digital technologies can further augment automation. Digital approaches are becoming increasingly important, and a digital HR strategy must be a key component of HR’s overall strategy. Not only do they hold the promise of new capabilities that can help HR build a workforce for the future and improve decision-making and effectiveness, they are, simply put, expected. Every person interacts with digital technologies daily, and every person in the organization is a potential user of HR systems. HR system experiences that are basedon consumer grade digital experiences will help engage every worker, inspiring them to do their best and helping them turn every organization’s purpose into performance.

The Cloud Helpers Blog Series - Platform as a Service

Welcome to our blog series, The Cloud Helpers. This series focuses on cloud computing topics and helps you understand how the cloud can impact your business today and in the future. Today we are going to focus on one on the definition of Platform as a Service or PaaS.

What is Paas?

Platform as a service (PaaS) is a complete development and deployment environment in the cloud, with resources that enable you to deliver everything from simple cloud-based apps to sophisticated, cloud-enabled enterprise applications. You purchase the resources you need from a cloud service provider on a pay-as-you-go basis and access them over a secure Internet connection.

PaaS includes infrastructure—servers, storage, and networking—but also middleware, development tools, business intelligence (BI) services, database management systems, and more. PaaS is designed to support the complete web application lifecycle: building, testing, deploying, managing, and updating.

PaaS allows you to avoid the expense and complexity of buying and managing software licenses, the underlying application infrastructure and middleware or the development tools and other resources. You manage the applications and services you develop, and the cloud service provider typically manages everything else.

Advantages of PaaS
  • DON’T HAVE TO INVEST IN PHYSICAL INFRASTRUCTURE - Being able to ‘rent’ virtual infrastructure has both cost benefits and practical benefits. They don’t need to purchase hardware themselves or employ the expertise to manage it.
  • MAKES DEVELOPMENT POSSIBLE FOR ‘NON-EXPERTS’ - With some PaaS offerings anyone can develop an application, simply through their web browser utilising one-click functionality.
  • SECURITY - Security is provided, including data security and backup and recovery
  • TEAMS IN VARIOUS LOCATIONS CAN WORK TOGETHER - Using the internet, developers spread across several locations can work together on the same application build.
  • FLEXIBILITY - Customers have control over the tools that are installed within their platforms and can create a platform that suits their specific requirements.
  • ADAPTABILITY - Features can be changed if circumstances dictate that they should.
PaaS vs. SaaS vs. IaaS
PaaS is one of three main categories of cloud computing services. The other two are software as a service (SaaS) and infrastructure as a service (IaaS).

With IaaS, a provider supplies the basic compute, storage and networking infrastructure along with the hypervisor (the virtualization layer). Users must then create virtual machines, install operating systems, support applications and data, and handle all of the configuration and management associated with those tasks.

With PaaS, a provider offers more of the application stack than IaaS providers, adding operating systems, middleware (such as databases) and other runtimes into the cloud environment.

With SaaS, a provider offers an entire application stack. Users simply log in and use the application that runs completely on the provider's infrastructure.

Tips for Choosing the Best Technology Partner - Part 2: Cloud

Picking the right technology partner can be a daunting task. You want to make sure this is the start of a long lasting successful partnership. In this new blog series, we will explore some of the top questions to address when picking a specific partner. In part 2 of our series, we will take a look at some questions to ask a potential Cloud partner. Did you miss part 1? Check out our tips for choosing an SAP Partner..

Cloud computing is becoming a normal part of everyday business. You need a cloud partner you can trust. A successful Cloud partner is determined by a number of factors, and selecting the right provider is high on the list. Here are a few important questions to ask when selecting a cloud partner?

1.    Which cloud services do you provide? Know what you are looking for. Many cloud vendors offer different solutions and services. Do you want to work with a cloud vendor that does a little of everything or a vendor that a specific focus on a service such as storage or Big Data?

What Does Approyo offer?

You need to understand where the data centers are locations, what security certifications are in place and how secure the cloud is. Your data is very important to your business and you need to have full confidence that it is as secure as possible.

What Does Approyo offer?
Security is very important to us. In fact, Approyo CEO Chris Carter was recently quoted in Talkin Cloud in an article about Cloud Security and has produced a number of videos talking about the Security

Our environments are certified with SAP and recently, we achieved a new certification status for the Cloud. We use tier III data center facilities with our partner, PCM. These are purpose built Tier III facilities defined by the Uptime Institute’s tiered classification system. Ask Approyo - What is the Cloud?

Cloud computing is everywhere these days. From your photos to big enterprises, the cloud is touching every aspect of our lives. But do you really know what the mythical cloud really is? Join Approyo CEO Christopher Carter as he talks answers one of the most common questions in technology... What is the Cloud?

Cloud computing is a type of Internet-based computing that provides shared computer processing resources and data to computers and other devices on demand. It is a model for enabling ubiquitous, on-demand access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., computer networks, servers, storage, applications and services), which can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort.

The cloud is a network of servers, sometimes hundreds and thousands of servers, and each server has a different function. Some servers use computing power to run applications or "deliver a service."

For example, Adobe recently moved its creative services to the cloud. You can no longer buy the Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, etc.) in a box set. Instead, you must pay a monthly subscription fee to use each individual service. That's why it's now called the "Adobe Creative Cloud" instead.

Other servers in the network are responsible for storing data.
For example, when you take a picture on your smartphone, it is stored on your phone's internal memory drive. However, when you upload the photos to Instagram, you are uploading it to the cloud.

Ask Approyo: Oracle and SAP

Recently Oracle acquired NetSuite. With this announcement, many people have been asking, what’s the big difference between Oracle and SAP? In fact, Approyo CEO Christopher Carter was recently featured in an article on Talkin Cloud about whether MSPs should offer Oracle and SAP. Hear directly from Christopher Carter as he talks about Oracle and SAP.

Oracle
With the recent NetSuite acquisition, Oracle is making in-roads to the SMB market. The problem is, Oracle is not a true cloud based company. Oracle restricts you in one cloud, the Oracle Cloud only. Oracle tends to be a hodgepodge of several different applications from recent acquisitions. This makes for a complicated core solution.

SAP
SAP allows you to go to multiple clouds, whether it’s the SAP Cloud, Approyo or another SAP partner. This way have more options available to you. Additionally, SAP has made some similar acquisitions in the marketplace. Unlike Oracle, these acquisitions are add-ons to the core solution. SAP has been built from the ground up through years and years of expertise.

Now is the time for SAP and Approyo

Ask Approyo: Public, Private and Hybrid Clouds

Cloud computing broadly breaks down into 3 different models – Public, Private and Hybrid - choosing the right one starts with understanding business objectives and how best they align with the values each model delivers.

Hear from Approyo CEO Christopher Carter as he breaks down Cloud Computing:

Public Cloud
Think of Amazon, anyone and everyone can be on this cloud with you.
A Public Cloud is one that’s based on the standard cloud computing model where services, applications and storage are made available to users over the Internet ‘as a service’ – typically on a Pay Per Use model. While Public Clouds are appealing to many businesses as they reduce complexity and lead times, because the underlying architecture is fixed, there is less scope for customization for security and performance. There are many types of Public Cloud, the most common being Infrastructure as a service (IaaS), Platform as a service (PaaS), Software as a service (SaaS) and Desktop as a service (DaaS) platforms – all of which we make available to the channel through our proprietary Cloud services. The economies of scale afforded by Public Cloud computing are what make this technology highly attractive.

Private Cloud
You own it. You and your network are segmented off. You don’t have anyone else on the same platform as you. Approyo runs this type of cloud for our customers.

Private Clouds consist of cloud infrastructure that is deployed solely for a single organization, whether managed internally or hosted by a third-party externally. They require a significant level of engagement from both management and IT departments to virtualize the business environment, and also mean evaluating how existing resources should be reallocated in the cloud. Private Clouds offer scope for advanced security, high availability or fault tolerant solutions that are not possible in a Public Cloud. However, as they are effectively ‘stand-alone’ solutions in their own right, building a Private Cloud still involves significant investment, and does not therefore deliver the shorter-term economies that Public Cloud can.

Hybrid Cloud
As the name suggests, a hybrid cloud comprises both private (internal) and public (external) cloud services. Typically a business might run an application primarily on a private cloud, but rely on a public cloud to accommodate spikes in usage. Customized rules and policies govern areas such as security and the underlying infrastructure, with tasks allocated to internal or external clouds as necessary.

Ask Approyo: What are some advantages to in-memory computing technology in SAP HANA?

The SAP HANA platform permits online transaction processing and online analytical processing workloads using a single data copy on a single platform. It stores data in high-speed memory, organizes it in columns, and partitions and distributes it among multiple servers. This delivers faster queries that aggregate data more efficiently while avoiding costly full-table scans, materialized views, and analytic indexes.

Run smarter – SAP HANA enables true market differentiation by unlocking new growth opportunities, boosting competitiveness, and inventing new data-driven business models for increased market share. Imagine the increased effectiveness of your knowledge workers when they have real-time information about accounts payable and receivable. They can spend more time on higher-value activities and less time on clerical work.

Run faster – SAP HANA dramatically speeds up your core business processes for reduced operational costs, driving business at the speed of the market and boosting responsiveness. Removing the constraints of batch-driven processes enables processing and decision making to happen in the moment, dramatically changing the way you drive your business.

Run simpler – SAP HANA helps you simplify business processes with immediate insight to action for improved effectiveness, empowering people to decide and act in the business moment and boost productivity. Combining transactions and analysis in one single database enables simplification of IT, leading to lower costs and greater efficiency

Ask Approyo: What are the key benefits for moving to SAP S/4HANA now?

SAP S/4HANA is designed to drive instant value across lines of business and industries with the ultimate sophistication: simplicity. SAP S/4HANA is only built on SAP HANA because, as of today, only the SAP HANA platform can deliver such level of massive simplifications and innovations.

From a business value perspective, this means that SAP S/4HANA creates unique opportunities to reinvent business models and drive new revenues and profits. First, enterprises can now easily connect to people, devices, and business networks to deliver new value to their customers on any channel – the Internet of Things and Big Data become accessible to any business. Second, enterprises can dramatically simplify their processes, drive them in real time and change them as needed to gain new efficiencies – no more batch processing is required. And finally, business users can now get any insight on any data from anywhere in real-time: planning, execution, prediction, and simulation – decisions may be made on the fly with a high level of granularity for faster business impact.

From an IT value perspective, this means that SAP S/4HANA creates unique opportunities to simplify the landscape and help reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) with SAP HANA as the great simplifier. First, enterprises can now reduce their data footprint and work with larger data sets in
one system (for example, ERP, CRM, SRM, SCM, PLM co-deployed) to save hardware costs, operational costs, and time. Second, innovation is also made simple with an open platform (SAP HANA Cloud Platform) to drive advanced applications – for example, predicting, recommending, and simulating – while protecting existing investments. Third, business users can leverage a simple
and role-based user experience based on modern design principles which minimizes training efforts while increases productivity. We also support customers with simple configuration: setting up the system and during its use. And finally, enterprises get choice of deployment: cloud, on premise, and even hybrid to drive quick time-to-value.
