2016 Year in Review - Top Blog Posts

As we end the year, we like to look back at some of the biggest news from 2016. This year was filled with new product announcements and big acquisitions in the SAP landscape. Our top blog posts from 2016 reflect these major announcements, along with recognition for Approyo from the Inc 5000.

Top Blog Posts of the year:

SAP unveiled SAP BW/4HANA, a next-generation data warehouse application for running a real-time digital enterprise.

SAP unveiled SAP HANA 2, the next-generation of the SAP HANA platform. These announcements were made at SAP TechEd Barcelona held on Nov. 8–10.

Traditional data warehouses rely on a extract-transform-load model to centralize data before analysis. This results in expensive data movement and duplication, and introduces latency that means real-time analytics are impossible.
SAP BW/4HANA enables a more flexible, real-time approach. As SAP HANA has proven, in-memory performance means that operational analytics can move back into the application, SAP S/4HANA is built around this, thus workload is moving from traditional data warehouses to SAP S/4HANA already. In addition, the vast amounts of data in data lakes and the Internet of Things will overwhelm a “centralize and duplicate” approach, so SAP BW/4HANA is designed to leverage smart data streaming (IoT), and smart data integration (to deliver a logical data warehouse approach).

Big news in the SAP Ecosystem! SAP is acquiring Altiscale.Altiscale provides us the ability to take everything into a cloud, take all the data and bring it into real-time with SAP HANA.

Altiscale is a four-year-old startup that specializes in cloud-based Hadoop and Spark services. Altiscale differentiates itself from these low-cost providers by combining high-performance Hadoop and Spark services with integrated ingestion, transformation, and analytical capabilities.

Embrace Digital Transformation Today with Approyo

Digital transformation is the reinvention of an organization through the use of digital technology to improve the way it performs and serves its constituents. Digital refers to the use of technology that generates, stores and processes data.

Is your business ready for the Digital World?
The growth of technology in everyday life cannot be ignored, with everything available at your fingertips. With growing customer demands, businesses must adapt new technologies, independent of the industry or size of the business.

Is your company ready for this new and evolving digital world? Monitoring data across the internet and evaluating security and financial data in real-time can transform the way a company does business.

Recent studies back this up time and time again. The IDC report “FutureScape: Worldwide CIO Agenda 2016 Predictions” emphasized that, "One-third of the top 20 firms in industry segments will be disrupted by new competitors within five years," and that it's a matter of "transform or perish."

The same IDC report goes on to predict that, by 2018, “70 percent of siloed digital transformation initiatives will ultimately fail because of insufficient collaboration, integration, sourcing or project management."

CIOs should not only care about digital transformation for the sake of their company's survival, they should focus on securing company-wide support and collaboration to get digital transformation right – before they get disrupted by a competitor or a startup.

Create a plan for Digital Transformation at your company.

Ask Approyo: What are some advantages to in-memory computing technology in SAP HANA?

The SAP HANA platform permits online transaction processing and online analytical processing workloads using a single data copy on a single platform. It stores data in high-speed memory, organizes it in columns, and partitions and distributes it among multiple servers. This delivers faster queries that aggregate data more efficiently while avoiding costly full-table scans, materialized views, and analytic indexes.

Run smarter – SAP HANA enables true market differentiation by unlocking new growth opportunities, boosting competitiveness, and inventing new data-driven business models for increased market share. Imagine the increased effectiveness of your knowledge workers when they have real-time information about accounts payable and receivable. They can spend more time on higher-value activities and less time on clerical work.

Run faster – SAP HANA dramatically speeds up your core business processes for reduced operational costs, driving business at the speed of the market and boosting responsiveness. Removing the constraints of batch-driven processes enables processing and decision making to happen in the moment, dramatically changing the way you drive your business.

Run simpler – SAP HANA helps you simplify business processes with immediate insight to action for improved effectiveness, empowering people to decide and act in the business moment and boost productivity. Combining transactions and analysis in one single database enables simplification of IT, leading to lower costs and greater efficiency

Ask Approyo: What makes SAP HANA fundamentally different?

SAP HANA is different by design. It stores all data in-memory, in columnar format and compressed. Because SAP HANA is so fast, sums, indexes, materialized views and aggregates are not required, and this can reduce the database footprint by 95%. Everything is calculated on-demand, on the fly, in main memory. This makes it possible for companies to run OLTP and analytics applications on the same instance at the same time, and to allow for any type of real-time, ad hoc queries and analyses.

On top of this SAP built solutions to all the problems of columnar databases, like concurrency (HANA uses MVCC) and row-level insert and update performance (HANA uses various mechanisms like a delta store).

Additionally, SAP added a bunch of engines inside SAP HANA to provide virtual OLAP functionality, data virtualization, text analysis, search, geospatial, graph (will be available soon) and web. It supports open standards like REST, JSON, ODBO, MDX, ODBC and JDBC. There is as much functionality in there as a whole Oracle or IBM software stack, in one database.

Ask Approyo: Are my applications accelerated without manual intervention and tuning with SAP HANA?

Are my applications accelerated without manual intervention and tuning with SAP HANA?

SAP HANA Platform vs. Disk-Based Database with In-Memory Cache

SAP HANA
YES - SAP HANA stores data in memory first.

With SAP HANA neither specialized caches nor multiple data copies are needed. SAP HANA is architected to manage data in-memory by default and uses a columnar store to seamlessly run both analytics and transactions. Additionally, it uses CPU caches to work on compressed data, leverages multi-core processors to scan columns in parallel and uses SIMD instructions to simultaneously process multiple data sets, delivering unmatched performance without indexes or materialized views. Applications are automatically accelerated because the data they need is readily available in real-time, without DBA intervention.

Disk-Based Database with In-Memory Cache
NO - All data is on the disk by default.

Disk-based databases are architected to manage data on disk and use add-on in-memory caches to selectively accelerate access to portions of data. To accelerate applications, DBAs identify what data to accelerate and ensure it is duplicated in the appropriate in-memory cache. Additionally they maintain indexes and other data structures to ensure that performance of both transactional and analytical workloads is acceptable. The task is
daunting since it is often challenging to predict what data needs acceleration and to ensure mixed workload performance, which leads to extensive testing and tuning.

Ask Approyo: Can I achieve predictable response times for ad hoc queries with SAP HANA?

SAP HANA Platform vs. Disk-Based Database with In-Memory Cache

SAP HANA
YES - Predictable response times

SAP HANA Platform maintains data in-memory by default, and all queries - planned and unplanned (ad-hoc) - have real-time access to the data they need and can return results in a predictable amount of time. It is possible to estimate response times using processors' scan speed, memory access time and size of data accessed by a query. SAP HANA also maintains one single copy of the data to be used for both analytical and transactional workloads, eliminating possible delays related to data synchronization and ensuring all queries are performed on fresh data.

Disk-Based Database with In-Memory Cache
NO - No predictable response times

Disk-based databases are architected to manage data on disk and use add-on in-memory caches to accelerate access to portions of data. Only queries that exclusively access cached data can return results in a predictable time. All other queries experience delays because access times depend on parameters such as where the data is placed on disk, which indexes are used, and the number of parallel processes accessing the disk. Ad-hoc
queries will experience unpredictable response times when some or all of the data required is available only on disk.

Ask Approyo: Can I get the full picture of my business in real time with SAP HANA?

SAP HANA Platform vs. Disk-Based Database with In-Memory Cache

SAP HANA
YES - Because all hot data is automatically in-memory.

Since SAP HANA Platform maintains data in-memory by default, data can be aggregated on-the-fly along any dimension, without requiring indexes, pre-aggregates or materialized views. As a result, SAP HANA can not only return aggregates in real time but also allow users to drill down to any level of detail to analyze data. With SAP HANA, users can analyze data at any level of granularity in a self-service manner and obtain results in real-time.

Disk-Based Database with In-Memory Cache
No - Because only pre-selected data is copied in-memory

Users are limited in the granularity of their real-time data analysis since disk-based databases are architected to manage data on disk and use a combination of add-on in-memory caches, indexes, pre-aggregates and materialized views to accelerate performance. For better performance the DBA has to duplicate data on in-memory caches and create data structures for data on disk before users can perform drill-downs. Additionally, if the size of the in-memory cache cannot accommodate all the required data, the DBA has to resize the system and potentially restart it.
