Ask Approyo – Why Alice in Wonderland?

You may have noticed that we use Alice in Wonderland imagery throughout our website, presentations and social media. Have you ever wondered why we use that image? Hear directly from Approyo CEO Christopher Carter.

Alice in Wonderland is one of my favorite books” says Christopher Carter. “I love the adventure and the Mad Hatter is one of my all-time favorite characters. It’s a pleasure to be able to read the book to my daughters now.

When Chris started Approyo, he was looking for an identity, something that is a bit out there. Chris saw the book sitting on his bookshelf and found the graphic that is now on the website. It just all fell together from there!

The leap you have to take from being an entrepreneur and the leap it takes to get customers to the new world of Big Data and SAP, it just fell into that world of Alice in Wonderland for me” adds Carter.

The Alice in wonderland image has been the main image Approyo has used since 2012.

Ask Approyo: Oracle and SAP

Recently Oracle acquired NetSuite. With this announcement, many people have been asking, what’s the big difference between Oracle and SAP? In fact, Approyo CEO Christopher Carter was recently featured in an article on Talkin Cloud about whether MSPs should offer Oracle and SAP. Hear directly from Christopher Carter as he talks about Oracle and SAP.

Oracle
With the recent NetSuite acquisition, Oracle is making in-roads to the SMB market. The problem is, Oracle is not a true cloud based company. Oracle restricts you in one cloud, the Oracle Cloud only. Oracle tends to be a hodgepodge of several different applications from recent acquisitions. This makes for a complicated core solution.

SAP
SAP allows you to go to multiple clouds, whether it’s the SAP Cloud, Approyo or another SAP partner. This way have more options available to you. Additionally, SAP has made some similar acquisitions in the marketplace. Unlike Oracle, these acquisitions are add-ons to the core solution. SAP has been built from the ground up through years and years of expertise.

Ask Approyo: Public, Private and Hybrid Clouds

Cloud computing broadly breaks down into 3 different models – Public, Private and Hybrid - choosing the right one starts with understanding business objectives and how best they align with the values each model delivers.

Hear from Approyo CEO Christopher Carter as he breaks down Cloud Computing:

Public Cloud
Think of Amazon, anyone and everyone can be on this cloud with you.
A Public Cloud is one that’s based on the standard cloud computing model where services, applications and storage are made available to users over the Internet ‘as a service’ – typically on a Pay Per Use model. While Public Clouds are appealing to many businesses as they reduce complexity and lead times, because the underlying architecture is fixed, there is less scope for customization for security and performance. There are many types of Public Cloud, the most common being Infrastructure as a service (IaaS), Platform as a service (PaaS), Software as a service (SaaS) and Desktop as a service (DaaS) platforms – all of which we make available to the channel through our proprietary Cloud services. The economies of scale afforded by Public Cloud computing are what make this technology highly attractive.

Private Cloud
You own it. You and your network are segmented off. You don’t have anyone else on the same platform as you. Approyo runs this type of cloud for our customers.

Private Clouds consist of cloud infrastructure that is deployed solely for a single organization, whether managed internally or hosted by a third-party externally. They require a significant level of engagement from both management and IT departments to virtualize the business environment, and also mean evaluating how existing resources should be reallocated in the cloud. Private Clouds offer scope for advanced security, high availability or fault tolerant solutions that are not possible in a Public Cloud. However, as they are effectively ‘stand-alone’ solutions in their own right, building a Private Cloud still involves significant investment, and does not therefore deliver the shorter-term economies that Public Cloud can.

Hybrid Cloud
As the name suggests, a hybrid cloud comprises both private (internal) and public (external) cloud services. Typically a business might run an application primarily on a private cloud, but rely on a public cloud to accommodate spikes in usage. Customized rules and policies govern areas such as security and the underlying infrastructure, with tasks allocated to internal or external clouds as necessary.

What’s right for you?
Your Data is important to your business. You want it to be secure, so no one else can touch your information. Connect with Approyo today and we will help your company navigate all the cloud options.

Ask Approyo: What makes SAP HANA fundamentally different?

SAP HANA is different by design. It stores all data in-memory, in columnar format and compressed. Because SAP HANA is so fast, sums, indexes, materialized views and aggregates are not required, and this can reduce the database footprint by 95%. Everything is calculated on-demand, on the fly, in main memory. This makes it possible for companies to run OLTP and analytics applications on the same instance at the same time, and to allow for any type of real-time, ad hoc queries and analyses.

On top of this SAP built solutions to all the problems of columnar databases, like concurrency (HANA uses MVCC) and row-level insert and update performance (HANA uses various mechanisms like a delta store).

Additionally, SAP added a bunch of engines inside SAP HANA to provide virtual OLAP functionality, data virtualization, text analysis, search, geospatial, graph (will be available soon) and web. It supports open standards like REST, JSON, ODBO, MDX, ODBC and JDBC. There is as much functionality in there as a whole Oracle or IBM software stack, in one database.

Ask Approyo: What is GRC?

Approyo recently introduced GRC Ignite. GRC Ignite provides customers with a flexible, innovative solution that can include SAP software license fees as well as SAP maintenance fees, hosting and hardware, and implementation and functional support services. In addition, customers may deploy the GRC applications as an entire suite or as individual elements, based upon needs and budget.

But what is GRC?
GRC (governance, risk management and compliance) software allows companies to integrate and manage IT operations that are subject to regulation. Such software typically combines applications that manage the core functions of GRC into a single integrated package.

GRC software enables an organization to pursue a systematic, organized approach to managing GRC-related strategy and implementation. Instead of keeping data in separate "silos," administrators can use a single framework to monitor and enforce rules and procedures. Successful installations enable organizations to manage risk, reduce costs incurred by multiple installations and minimize complexity for managers.

Why is GRC software important?
GRC software can satisfy the needs of multiple stakeholders, including:
  • Business executives that need to identify and manage risk.
  • Finance managers assigned to meet regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Legal counsels grappling with discovery and records retention.
  • IT directors managing software installations related to GRC projects across an organization.

Data retention and risk management procedures mandated by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), HIPAA, Basel II and regional regulations have all placed unprecedented pressure on IT administrators to coordinate enterprise-wide tracking and organization of compliance measures. As a result, the GRC software category has rapidly become a hotly contested space between industry giants like SAP, Oracle, IBM, CA and a host of other companies. Given the complex regulatory burden imposed upon both executives and IT administrators, the tools provided by GRC software will become increasingly important to meeting the new standards.

Ask Approyo: What are the key benefits for moving to SAP S/4HANA now?

SAP S/4HANA is designed to drive instant value across lines of business and industries with the ultimate sophistication: simplicity. SAP S/4HANA is only built on SAP HANA because, as of today, only the SAP HANA platform can deliver such level of massive simplifications and innovations.

From a business value perspective, this means that SAP S/4HANA creates unique opportunities to reinvent business models and drive new revenues and profits. First, enterprises can now easily connect to people, devices, and business networks to deliver new value to their customers on any channel – the Internet of Things and Big Data become accessible to any business. Second, enterprises can dramatically simplify their processes, drive them in real time and change them as needed to gain new efficiencies – no more batch processing is required. And finally, business users can now get any insight on any data from anywhere in real-time: planning, execution, prediction, and simulation – decisions may be made on the fly with a high level of granularity for faster business impact.

From an IT value perspective, this means that SAP S/4HANA creates unique opportunities to simplify the landscape and help reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) with SAP HANA as the great simplifier. First, enterprises can now reduce their data footprint and work with larger data sets in
one system (for example, ERP, CRM, SRM, SCM, PLM co-deployed) to save hardware costs, operational costs, and time. Second, innovation is also made simple with an open platform (SAP HANA Cloud Platform) to drive advanced applications – for example, predicting, recommending, and simulating – while protecting existing investments. Third, business users can leverage a simple
and role-based user experience based on modern design principles which minimizes training efforts while increases productivity. We also support customers with simple configuration: setting up the system and during its use. And finally, enterprises get choice of deployment: cloud, on premise, and even hybrid to drive quick time-to-value.

Ask Approyo: Can I answer all my data discovery questions without adding more DBAs to do data tuning with SAP HANA?

SAP HANA Platform vs. Disk-Based Database with In-Memory Cache

SAP HANA
YES - Because all hot data is automatically in-memory.

SAP HANA Platform is architected to manage data in-memory by default. Applications are automatically accelerated because the data they need is readily available in-memory. Additionally, both planned and unplanned questions are answered in real-time and drill-downs along any dimension are possible without additional DBA intervention. No data copies, indexes, pre aggregates or materialized view are required to deliver real-time performance.

Disk-Based Database with In-Memory Cache
NO - The database must be periodically reconfigured. More questions = More DBA time

Disk-based databases are architected to manage data on disk and use add-on in-memory caches and other data structures to accelerate performance. Before users can analyze data along new dimensions, DBAs need to configure and tune the database to ensure acceptable response times. This might involve copying data to the in-memory cache, dropping or creating new indexes, or creating materialized views. Some of these actions might negatively affect the performance of other applications and thus require additional tuning. For example, the time required to update indexes can slow down transactional applications.
