What is the SAP Intelligent Enterprise?

One of the most talked about topics at this years SAP SAPPHIRE NOW in June was The Intelligent Enterprise. This topic was  in nearly every keynote, speech and marketing material at the event. So what exactly is SAP's new strategy.

The next era of enterprise computing will be defined by intelligent technologies

For more than 45 years, SAP has been on a journey with our customers, helping them create value for their organizations by applying technology to solve some of their most complex challenges. In each era of enterprise computing, SAP has evolved our strategy – and product portfolio – so our customers can run better. In the 1960s and 1970s, as mainframe computing gained popularity, we enabled our first customers to automate their plant floor operations with material-requirements planning software. In the 1990s, as companies expanded their use of the Internet, SAP helped connect our customers’ headquarters with their subsidiaries through SAP R/3® software for enterprise resource planning.

And, over the past 10 years, as cloud computing and Big Data have become ever more pervasive, with SAP HANA software, along with SAP's extensive portfolio of cloud applications, has helped our customers begin their own digital transformations. Now, as technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, the Internet of Things (IoT), advanced analytics and blockchain become mainstream, SAP has a new opportunity – to help turn our customers’ businesses into intelligent enterprises, with new capabilities that enable their workforces to focus on higher-value outcomes.

Intelligent technologies will drive a next-generation value economy

Advances in machine learning are enabling algorithms to become highly accurate in natural language understanding and in image and speech recognition. Businesses can use these  increasingly sophisticated capabilities to  drive the next level of intelligent business- processes automation and eliminate  repetitive manual tasks.

Automation can now also be  implemented far more cost-effectively, because it is embedded more and more  within business processes. All of which  means that the workforce will be able  to focus on high-value activities like customer success, strategic planning, and innovation.

Advances in ubiquitous connectivity  and edge computing are creating a step change in business productivity.  This connectivity, coupled with artificial intelligence and machine learning, can  be used to analyze petabytes of data to affect real business outcomes.  IoT can connect the entire value chain,  from design to production to supply chain, and data-driven insights of customer  preferences can inspire better design, lower material costs, and reduce risk.

Real-time analysis of machines can predict maintenance needs, identify potential  quality problems in manufacturing  processes before they occur, and reduce  asset downtime by as much as 50%. The integration of advanced analytics  capabilities into applications allows  business users to analyze data on the fly  and informs better decision-making. Empowered users, benefiting from embedded analytics in business  processes, can get real-time visibility  into their changing environment, simulate the impact of business decisions, and achieve better customer outcomes.

Future business challenges will be radically different

The global economic growth of the last nine years has been powered largely by technology. Record corporate profits and new business models can all be tied to technology-driven innovation. On average, an S&P 500 company is now being replaced once every two weeks. This “tumble rate” is accelerating – with the difference between winners and losers tied to their ability to embrace digital technologies. The next decade will, of course, bring about even greater tectonic shifts. To address these challenges, businesses need to make sense of a growing volume of data, create a step change in productivity, and innovate with relentless clock-speed. In other words, they need to accelerate value creation. This is the heart of the Intelligent Enterprise.

To help businesses become Intelligent Enterprises and achieve breakthrough outcomes, SAP provides three essential components:

Intelligent Suite - Will offer unparalleled, breakthrough business value. SAP provides intelligent, integrated applications that enable our customers to automate their day-to-day business processes and better interact with their customers, suppliers, and employees. These applications will be industry specific, global, and applicable to large enterprises and to small and midsize enterprises.

Digital Platform - Will enable data-driven intelligence and innovation.
With the SAP Cloud Platform and SAP HANA Data Management Suite, SAP will facilitate the collection, connection and orchestration of data, as well as the integration and extension of processes within the intelligent suite.

The Intelligent EnterpriseIntelligent Technologies - Will embed intelligence in applications and facilitate new co-innovations.
With SAP Leonardo, SAP will embed intelligent technologies in customers’ core processes, enabling them to use their data to detect patterns, predict outcomes and suggest actions. For customers who want to innovate even faster, SAP solutions will offer industry innovation kits and open innovation services, which apply design thinking methodologies to new business models by industry.

The Cloud Helpers Blog Series - GRC (governance, risk management and compliance)

GRC (governance, risk management and compliance) software allows companies to integrate and manage IT operations that are subject to regulation. Such software typically combines applications that manage the core functions of GRC into a single integrated package.

GRC software enables an organization to pursue a systematic, organized approach to managing GRC-related strategy and implementation. Instead of keeping data in separate "silos," administrators can use a single framework to monitor and enforce rules and procedures. Successful installations enable organizations to manage risk, reduce costs incurred by multiple installations and minimize complexity for managers.

Why is GRC software important?

  • GRC software can satisfy the needs of multiple stakeholders, including:
  • Business executives that need to identify and manage risk.
  • Finance managers assigned to meet regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Legal counsels grappling with discovery and records retention.
  • IT directors managing software installations related to GRC projects across an organization.

Data retention and risk management procedures mandated by the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), HIPAA, Basel II and regional regulations have all placed unprecedented pressure on IT administrators to coordinate enterprise-wide tracking and organization of compliance measures. As a result, the GRC software category has rapidly become a hotly contested space between industry giants like SAP, Oracle, IBM, CA and a host of other companies. Given the complex regulatory burden imposed upon both executives and IT administrators, the tools provided by GRC software will become increasingly important to meeting the new standards.

Key Observations from SAP SAPPHIRE NOW 2018

Another SAP SAPPHIRE NOW Conference is in the books. The Approyo team enjoyed meeting new and old friends at the show and our After Party. This year featured a number of important announcement that will impact the entire SAP Ecosytem. We look forward to implementing these new solutions for our clients. Here are some of the top observations from the Approyo team.

Intelligent Enterprise - Powered by SAP HANA and the Cloud
The "Intelligent Enterprise" was the biggest phrase of the conference. It was on all the signs and banners throughout the show floor and top keynote speakers like SAP CEO Bill McDermott and SAP co-founder Dr. Hasso Plattner.

In Plattner’s view, the intelligent enterprise is the “logical consequence” of what happens when modern technology meets traditional business processes. But make no mistake, the intelligent enterprise is much more than a re-vamp of traditional ERP, and it’s been a long yet worthwhile journey for SAP, whose significant investment in building out its intelligent enterprise — $50 billion since 2010 — is about to pay dividends on a multitude of levels.

“If you want to be intelligent, we have to react quickly,” Plattner said during his keynote presentation to thousands of customers and partners in attendance at SAPPHIRE NOW, SAP’s annual premier business and technology event this week in Orlando. “We have done a bunch of things to accelerate the development of our systems — and we should be much faster with the deployment of our services.”

For years, Plattner lectured about the virtues of SAP HANA, the company’s game-changing in-memory database whose unmatched speed and efficiency allows 22,000 of its customers to remove redundant aggregation from their IT systems, a root cause of bad performance. With SAP’s intelligent enterprise, Plattner promises unbelievable speed and simplified code and data for all.
“We are out of the woods and we can create apps now in real time,” said Plattner. “We have created a completely different kind of flexibility.

SAP HANA Data Management Suite
The SAP HANA Data Management Suite is based on the latest versions of the SAP HANA business data platform. It allows for secure, governed enterprise-class applications and analytics by providing an open, hybrid and multicloud-enabled solution suite that orchestrates all the data needed into a trusted, unified landscape. SAP HANA Data Management Suite is the foundation for building agile, data-driven applications that are always tapping into live data. With one query, SAP HANA Data Management Suite can deliver results from a single logical data set that covers the whole enterprise — turning the concept of universal data into a reality. Read our full blog post about the new SAP HANA Data Management Suite.

SAP C/4HANA
Building on the company’s reputation as an end-to-end business solutions provider, the new SAP C/4HANA suite will offer full integration with SAP’s business applications portfolio, led by its market-leading ERP suite, SAP S/4HANA. The combination of assets features new machine learning capabilities from SAP Leonardo, a set of intelligent technologies the company introduced last year, as well as the new SAP HANA Data Management Suite, which enables companies to gain visibility and control of their highly distributed data. The company’s overall strategy, focused on helping businesses run as intelligent enterprises, highlights the demand for a balanced approach to automation in the workplace.

SAP Leonardo: Intelligence Inside the Intelligent Enterprise
Innovation is not about using technology for technology’s sake, it’s about applying the right technology in the context of your business process to drive a better outcome from that process. Industry and business process expertise means that SAP can apply the right intelligent technologies at the right points in a business process to deliver tremendous value and improve the outcome. SAP customers get access to SAP Leonardo in three ways:
  • Embedded in SAP applications: From SAP Ariba to SAP Hybris offerings and SAP S/4HANA, we are adding intelligence to SAP applications. When you use the intelligent capabilities of these applications, you are using SAP Leonardo.
  • Industry innovation kits: Pre-integrated capabilities that repeatedly accelerate solutions to common industry problems.
  • Open innovation:  Take a best-in-class approach to innovation, using intelligent technologies, on SAP Cloud Platform.
Regardless of how you access SAP Leonardo, you will gain intelligent capabilities, applied to business processes, that create better business results.

SAP Announces SAP C/4HANA

Major news from the first morning at the 2018 SAP SAPPHIRE NOW Conference. SAP CEO Bill McDermott announced a new suite of applications, SAP C/4HANA, to help businesses serve and retain customers. SAP also announced the SAP HANA Data Management Suite, the industry’s first comprehensive data management solution that enables companies to turn data sprawl into business value.

Here is the full announcement from SAP.com:

SAP C/4HANA is an integrated offering designed to modernize the sales-only focus of legacy CRM solutions. Following the completed acquisitions of market leaders Hybris, Gigya and CallidusCloud, SAP now ties together solutions to support all front-office functions, such as consumer data protection, marketing, commerce, sales and customer service.

“SAP was the last to accept the status quo of CRM and is now the first to change it,” McDermott said. “The legacy CRM systems are all about sales; SAP C/4HANA is all about the consumer. We recognize that every part of a business needs to be focused on a single view of the consumer. When you connect all SAP applications together in an intelligent cloud suite, the demand chain directly fuels the behaviors of the supply chain.”

More About SAP C/4HANA
The SAP C/4HANA portfolio includes SAP Marketing Cloud, SAP Commerce Cloud, SAP Service Cloud, SAP Customer Data Cloud (including the acquired Gigya solutions) and SAP Sales Cloud (including the acquired CallidusCloud solutions). Additionally, SAP Sales Cloud unites the SAP Hybris Revenue Cloud solution and SAP Hybris Cloud for Customer (comprised of SAP Hybris Sales Cloud and SAP Hybris Service Cloud solutions).

These cloud solutions — formerly on the market under the SAP Hybris brand name — as well as SAP’s commerce and customer engagement organization are now consolidated under the SAP Customer Experience business unit to support a consistent brand experience.
